Bafang BBS02 mid-drive: settings to change on day one and the gear-shift sensor you want
Difficultymedium
Cost$35 in accessories
Stock programming is jerky. With the $15 USB programming cable and the open-source config tool, set Start Current to 10 to 15% (soft start), Keep Current to 60 to 80%, PAS levels to a smooth ramp, and turn down Current Decay. Lower the max current a bit for longevity on hot climbs.
Add the gear shift sensor ($20): it cuts power for a fraction of a second when you shift so the chain is not under load. Without it you will replace a chain and cassette every season. Keep the stock 46T ring for flat land; a 42T or Lekkie 36T for hills. Grease the inside when you first open it; the factory grease is minimal.

Small addition: wear eye protection for the part where you pry it. Learned that one the hard way.
Upvoted for the safety notes alone.
Can confirm, the cheap part is the one that fails. Replaced mine twice before reading this.
Tried this over the weekend and it worked first time. Thanks for writing it up properly.
Yep, same here. The second time is always faster.
I did the same repair last month and your step 3 is where I got stuck. Wish I had this then.
