Garage lighting: how many lumens, what color, and the $100 upgrade that changes everything

Cost$100 to $200

Target 50 to 80 lumens per square foot for a work garage. A two-car garage (400 sq ft) wants 20,000 to 30,000 lumens: that is six to eight 4 ft LED shop lights at 4,000 lumens each. Pick 4000K to 5000K (neutral to daylight) and CRI 80+. Linkable fixtures plugged into one switched outlet keep it simple. Put two over the bench, two over each bay, one at the door.

Add a motion-sensor light at the entry door for carrying groceries. Paint the ceiling and walls white if they are raw drywall; it is worth 30% more light for free.

Would this work on the older model? Mine is about ten years older than the one shown.

Unplug it. Always. Takes two seconds and the worst case otherwise is a trip to the ER.
