French cleats: the only garage wall system you need, and the three mistakes to avoid

Build: rip 3/4" plywood (not MDF, not 1/2") into 4" strips with one edge at 45°. Screw them to studs every 8 to 12" vertically with the bevel facing up and in, 2.5" screws into every stud. Every holder gets a matching cleat on its back.

Mistakes:

  1. Using drywall anchors. Cleats carry a lot; studs only.
  2. Making the bevel too steep or using thin stock. 45° in 3/4" ply holds hundreds of pounds per cleat.
  3. Building holders before you own the tools. Hang the cleats, pile the tools on the bench, then build a holder per tool so each one fits.

A full 8 ft wall takes one sheet of plywood and an afternoon. Then it is never finished, which is the point.

Materials

  • 3/4" plywood sheet
  • 2.5" construction screws

Tools

  • table saw or circular saw with guide
  • drill
  • level
  • stud finder

Tried this over the weekend and it worked first time. Thanks for writing it up properly.

The "what went wrong" section is the most useful part of this. More people should do that.

Question: do you need to disconnect power for this or is it safe to leave it plugged in?

I did the same repair last month and your step 3 is where I got stuck. Wish I had this then.

Solid. Sending this to my brother who keeps asking me to fix his.

The embedded video is clearer than the official service manual, which is a little embarrassing for the manufacturer.
