Running a new circuit to a detached shed or garage: direct burial, conduit and a disconnect

Difficultyhard
Timea weekend
Cost$300 to $600

Feeder from the house panel: a 2-pole breaker (30A to 60A depending on the loads), 4-wire (two hots, neutral, ground: the neutral and ground are separated at the outbuilding subpanel), UF-B cable direct-buried 24" deep or THWN in PVC conduit at 18". The outbuilding gets its own grounding electrode (a rod or two) and a disconnect. Mark the trench with warning tape a foot above the cable.

Trenching is the hard part; rent a trencher for $100 and do it in an hour instead of a weekend with a shovel. Permit and inspection: yes.

Question: do you need to disconnect power for this or is it safe to leave it plugged in?

Unplug it. Always. Takes two seconds and the worst case otherwise is a trip to the ER.

The embedded video is clearer than the official service manual, which is a little embarrassing for the manufacturer.

Right around what the post says, give or take shipping.
