Ceiling fan install: the box is the whole job
Difficultymedium

A fan weighs 20 to 50 lb and vibrates. A standard plastic light box is not rated for it. You need a fan-rated box (marked "acceptable for fan support"), either a new-work box on a brace between joists or a retrofit brace that expands between joists through the existing hole. Then the wiring is simple: black to black, white to white, blue (light) to black or its own switch leg, ground to ground.
Balance it with the clip kit if it wobbles; 90% of wobble is blade tracking, not the box. Switches: if you have only one switch leg and want independent light/fan control, a fan with a remote receiver in the canopy is easier than fishing a new wire.

Small addition: wear eye protection for the part where you pry it. Learned that one the hard way.
Upvoted for the safety notes alone.
Unplug it. Always. Takes two seconds and the worst case otherwise is a trip to the ER.
Would this work on the older model? Mine is about ten years older than the one shown.
Right around what the post says, give or take shipping.
Question: do you need to disconnect power for this or is it safe to leave it plugged in?
