Machine was my aunt's, sat for ten years. Cleaned and oiled, top tension at 4. Still get a bird's nest under the fabric on the first stitch and it never recovers.

Solved it myself, posting for the next person. Thread was not seated between the tension discs because I threaded with the presser foot DOWN. Foot up, rethread, perfect stitches. Twenty years of sewing and still.

The 401A is one of the best machines Singer ever made. Congrats on the inheritance.
