✅ Adding a 240V outlet for a welder in an attached garage: permit, wire size, and what the inspector looks for

Panel is 20 feet away, has two open slots. Want a 50A 6-50 receptacle. Doing it myself with a permit. What do inspectors actually check?

They check: wire size (6 AWG copper for 50A), the breaker is listed for your panel brand, the receptacle is in a box with proper strain relief, the cable is protected where it could be damaged (conduit or guard strips below 8 ft in a garage), the panel label is updated, and that your load calc shows the service can take it. Bring the load calc on paper. Turn the main off and remember the service lugs are still live.

Also run the cable where you will actually weld. Mine is 6 feet from where I ended up putting the table and I regret it daily.
